Modalities & Pricing

Modalities of massage and bodywork available at The Balancing Hand, what to expect at your session, and pricing per session.

Clinical Massage

Clinical massage focuses on a limited area of the body during a single session – perhaps just the upper back or the hands.  The area of the body that is massaged is determined by the therapist based on the client’s description of their symptoms.  The intention of clinical massage is to assess the soft tissues of the area being massaged, and to improve function and reduce symptoms/effects in the affected part(s) of the body.  The client should expect to disrobe the area of the body being massaged, though adaptations can be made for clients who wish to remain clothed.  Techniques used include deep gliding strokes, trigger point therapy, and cross fiber friction.  These techniques may also be included in other types of massages, depending on the needs and condition of the client.  Clinical massages are done with hypoallergenic massage cream.
Available session lengths and pricing:

30-minute session: $30
60-minute session: $60

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massage typically is done on the full body, including the head and feet.  While the obvious intention of this type of massage is to induce relaxation, it also often results in the client feeling less pain, anxiety, and/or nausea, and generally feeling less bothered by any health issues they may have.  The client should expect to disrobe their entire body to their comfort level, though adaptations can be made for clients who wish to remain clothed.  Traditional Swedish-style techniques used include gliding, kneading, rocking, tapping, friction, and compression strokes.  Techniques drawn from clinical massage and other bodywork styles may also be incorporated, depending on the client’s symptoms and session goals.  Massage oil is often used for relaxation massages, though lotion or cream may be used instead.  These are usually hypoallergenic and with no added scent, though peppermint lotion may be used for foot massage with client consent.  No oil, lotion, or cream is used on clients’ heads or faces.
Available session lengths and pricing:

30-minute session: $30
60-minute session: $60
90-minute session: $90

Pregnancy & Post-Partum Massage

Pregnancy and post-partum massage and bodywork is typically done on the full body.  Pregnant and post-partum clients of any gender or genders are welcome to receive this work.  The intention of this work is to help the client relax, relieve stress, and address physiological effects of pregnancy, such as back pain and leg cramps.  The client should expect to disrobe their entire body to their comfort level, though adaptations can be made for clients who wish to remain clothed.  Monica is certified in Bodywork for the Childbearing Year, an advanced training that incorporates multiple massage and bodywork techniques, including relaxation massage, strain counterstrain, muscle energy, joint mobilization, myofascial release, and Alexander technique.  Massage oil is often used, though lotion or cream may be used instead.  All of these are hypoallergenic and with no added scent.
Available session lengths and pricing:

30-minute session: $30
60-minute session: $60
90-minute session: $90

Reiki

Reiki is a gentle form of healing energy work.  The practitioner acts as a conduit for healing energy to pass through them and into the client by placing their hands on or just above the client in a series of locations on the front and back of the body.  The practitioner does not assess the client’s energy and does not act to add or remove any energy within the client.  Rather, the client’s body accepts the amount of healing energy that it wishes.  Clients sometimes report feeling warmth or tingling at the site being treated, while other clients do not report such sensations.  Clients usually feel very relaxed following a session, and may feel like they are meditating during the session.  The client should expect to remain clothed during the session.  No oil, lotion, or cream are used.  Monica received her level II Reiki training from Deborah Ringdahl, Reiki master, Usui Shiki Ryoho lineage.  Reiki is available in stand-alone sessions and as an add-on to any massage or bodywork session.
Available session lengths and pricing:

15-minute add-on: $10
30-minute add-on: $25
30-minute session: $30
60-minute session: $60

Thai Foot Massage

Thai foot massage incorporates Thai relaxation massage strokes to the feet and lower legs as well as a generalized type of reflexology.  The intention is to relax the client and support their overall well-being.  The client should expect to have their feet and lower legs uncovered, though they may keep the rest of their body clothed.  Techniques used include gliding, friction, and compression strokes, some of which are conducted with a specialized massage tool.  Massage lotion or cream is used.  Peppermint lotion may be used with client consent.  Thai foot massages are available in stand-alone sessions and as an add-on to any massage or bodywork session.
Available session lengths and pricing:

15-minute add-on: $10
30-minute add-on: $25
30-minute session: $30
60-minute session: $60

Other Bodywork Techniques

Other bodywork techniques may be included in your massage and bodywork sessions as appropriate for your health conditions and session goals.  These techniques are drawn from Ortho-Bionomy, strain counterstrain, muscle energy, myofascial release, Alexander technique, joint mobilization, relaxation breathing, and more.

Chair Massage & Reiki

Chair massage and Reiki are available both in the office and for events in Minneapolis and St. Paul.  In-office chair sessions are priced at the same rates as above.  Chair massage may be a good option for clients who wish to remain dressed for any reason or who cannot lay flat comfortably.  On-site chair sessions are very popular for events and offices, and each participant will get to choose whether they’d like to try Reiki or massage.  On-site services are $85 per hour, though lower rates may be negotiated for events that are longer than 2 hours or for non-profit organizations.  On-site services may also be available in other parts of the Twin Cities metro area, depending on local licensing requirements.  Please contact Monica with questions or to discuss scheduling your event.
